Our History

Our owner and executive chef, Stephen C. Merkel, has been driven by a love for food since he was a child. Growing up in a family that placed a strong emphasis on sharing meals together, Stephen learned early on that food has the power to bring people together. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Stephen honed his skills at the legendary Chatham Bars Inn in Cape Cod, where he worked under the guidance of Chef Al Hynes. With years of experience under his belt, Stephen decided it was time to bring his culinary expertise back to his hometown of New Milford, CT, and Steve's Deli was born.
