Our Story

Our story began with Lewis E. Bianchi, founder of Bianchi Funeral Home, Inc. Lewis was a native and lifelong resident of Harlan County and was proud of his Harlan County heritage. He was born in 1924 at King's Hollow in Dressen to John Bianchi, an Italian immigrant, and Lillian C. Bianchi, a Harlan County native. He grew up in Baxter along with two brothers and three sisters and learned at an early age the value of good work ethics. He helped his father lay stone and had jobs delivering newspapers and milk. While attending Harlan High School, he worked for a local funeral home, and the rest as they say "is history." After graduation, he worked for a short time at a steel mill in West Virginia but knew he wanted to be in the funeral business. He came back to Kentucky where he attended the University of Kentucky. After U.K., he attended the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1949. He married his college sweetheart, Elizabeth Ann "Betty, " and returned to Evarts, where together they opened the Evarts Funeral Home. A few years later, he opened Loyall and Tri City Funeral Homes and more recently, the Harlan Funeral Home. His wife died in 1968 after a long battle against cancer. Lewis was left to raise their seven children and supported each of them through their higher education. He was also the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren. He was honored to have served Harlan County for over 62 years.
