Our History

Johnson's Bakery has been a beloved institution in the Duluth-Superior area for over seven decades, serving generations with our commitment to quality and tradition. Our story begins in January 1946, when Bill and Lillian Johnson, with the invaluable help of Bill's mother, Mary, opened their doors. Bill and Mary brought their baking expertise to the venture, while Lillian, a former teacher, found herself drawn into the world of cake decorating. Two years was all it took for her to master the art, establishing herself as a sought-after decorator, particularly known for her exquisite wedding cakes. Lillian's talent and dedication to the craft meant she remained an integral part of Johnson's Bakery right up until her 86th year, often having the pleasure of creating wedding cakes for couples whose mothers she'd served years before.

This era saw Duluth and its surrounding towns flourish with a unique community of family-owned bakeries. Each one cherished both their craft and the friendly competition that existed between them, a testament to their mutual respect and passion. Johnson's Bakery stands as the last remaining member of this special group, carrying on the legacy of quality and dedication passed down through generations of the Johnson family. This enduring success can be attributed to the invaluable lessons learned from those who came before us, lessons that emphasized the importance of prioritizing our customers and producing the highest quality goods, even though the daily grind of baking from scratch presented its own unique set of challenges.

Beyond their commitment to baking excellence, Bill and Lillian instilled in their team the importance of working together, side-by-side with both passion and dedication. Their entrepreneurial spirit couldn't be contained, and they readily embraced the opportunity to expand their reach by opening a bakery in Shoppers' City, Duluth's first shopping center, many years ago. This new venture, coupled with their demanding schedule at the original location, coupled with their dedication to their church and community, and to their family, was a testament to their unwavering work ethic. Bill's involvement with the Minnesota Retail Bakers Association, eventually reaching the position of president, spoke volumes about his industry leadership and commitment. This dedication was passed down to their son, Scott, who also served as president of the same organization, solidifying the Johnson family's legacy within the baking community. Both Bill and Lillian were honored with induction into the prestigious Minnesota Bakers Hall of Fame, a testament to their unwavering dedication to the craft.
