Our History

Our journey began in 1920 when Charles Maxwell, a former resident, opened the first hospital in Lamar. Over the years, we have undergone significant transformations, including the purchase of the hospital by the Dominican Sisters of the Immaculate Conception in 1946 and the renaming of the hospital to Sacred Heart Hospital. In 1967, the sisters announced plans to close the hospital due to lack of funding, prompting the formation of the Prowers County Hospital District. The district assumed responsibility for the hospital and renamed it Prowers Medical Center, which has continued to serve the community to this day.
