Please come and train with us!
Our Story
Northcoast Aikido was founded in 1977 by J. Thomas Read Sensei, who received formal sanction from Master Michio Hikitsuchi, his primary teacher during his years of training in Japan. With over four decades of experience, our dojo has earned a reputation as one of the oldest, most respected, and most unorthodox Aikido schools in the country.
Mission
At Northcoast Aikido, our mission is to provide a supportive and inclusive environment where students of all ages and skill levels can come together to learn and grow. Our experienced instructors are dedicated to teaching Aikido as it was passed down to them, emphasizing the development of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Services
We offer a range of classes for adults, teens, and children, catering to different ages and skill levels. Our classes cover various aspects of Aikido, including:
- Adult Classes: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
- Teen Classes (ages 13 - 17): Monday, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Youth Classes (ages 6 - 12): Wednesday, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
In addition to our regular classes, we also host special seminars (gassuku) and workshops, which provide opportunities for students to learn from experienced instructors and network with fellow practitioners.
Aikibojitsu
Northcoast Aikido is also home to Aikibojitsu, a unique study of the staff as a weapon and means of self-examination, developed by Read Sensei. This comprehensive approach combines the principles of Aikido with traditional staff work, focusing on developing inner strength, balance, and coordination.
Community
Our community is built on mutual respect, trust, and support. We welcome students of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities, and strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
Resources
For those interested in exploring Aikido further, we provide a list of recommended readings on the art's history, philosophy, and techniques. We also maintain a directory of Aikido schools and dojos in other cities for those who may be traveling.
Etiquette
To ensure a safe and harmonious training environment, we ask that all students adhere to the following etiquette guidelines:
1. Remove shoes at the top of the stairs and never enter or carry shoes inside.
2. Maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness, especially during training.
3. Respect the shomen and maintain a soft bow when entering or leaving the dojo.
4. Address instructors with respect and gratitude.
5. Minimize talking during class and prioritize focus on training.
6. Inform the teacher if you need to leave early or arrive late.
7. Take personal responsibility for your training and the safety of your partner.
8. Practice with care and respect for the dojo and your fellow students.
