Feature Tile Hand-Painted

At Feature Tile, we specialize in creating unique, hand-crafted ceramic tiles that transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary works of art. Our story begins with the founder, Janet Starr, who started her art career as a painter and later received a BA in Fine Art from UC Santa Cruz. This traditional art background has significantly influenced her tile designs, contributing to the fine quality of her work.

For over three decades, Janet has been creating hand-crafted ceramic tiles that are custom made to order. Her designs are inspired by the Arts & Crafts Tradition and the Art Nouveau Period, which are reflected in her most popular installations, including fireplaces. Each tile is handmade from stoneware clay, carved into a plaster master mold, and hand-pressed to create an image with a raised outline. The tiles are then slowly dried and bisque fired at 2048°F, followed by custom developed stoneware glazes that are hand-painted between the outlines. The glaze colors are soft, rich, and exclusive to the artist, adding an extra layer of uniqueness to each tile.

The finished products are similar to tiles found in many historic homes, with each order customizable by selecting from a 16-color palette. Our range of styles also includes bas-relief animals and sea life in lowfire clay with high gloss glazes, raised relief border tiles in terra-cotta clay with matt glazes, and shaped ceramic tile murals in stoneware or clay. Additionally, we offer a large selection of hand-painted murals and individual decorative designs on commercial tile.
