Our History

We are a family-owned and operated business, carrying the torch of a legacy that began over 50 years ago in the heart of Mount Prospect. For locals, Van Driel's has been a familiar sight for generations, evolving alongside the community it serves.

The original Van Driel's was more than just a store; it was a neighborhood hub. In its early days, during the 1940s and 50s, it was a quintessential old-fashioned drugstore, complete with a bustling candy counter, hand-written greeting cards, and a delightful soda fountain. Herb Van Driel, the original owner, welcomed residents with a warm smile and a promise of quality products and friendly service. His wife added a special touch, whipping up delicious homemade pies and serving refreshing sodas that made Van Driel's a popular gathering spot.

As time progressed, Van Driel's adapted to the changing needs of the community. In 1956, Herb hired Max Ullrich, a recently married veteran eager to contribute his skills. Max began working as a pharmacist, quickly becoming an integral part of the growing business.

When Herb retired in 1968, Max recognized an opportunity and a challenge. The rise of large chain drugstores, like Walgreens, threatened the cornerstones of independent businesses. Max made a bold decision in 1970, transforming Van Driel's into a specialized medical supply store. This strategic shift proved to be a turning point. Max and his wife, Irmi, poured their hearts into building a reputation for excellence, offering a comprehensive range of medical supplies and personalized customer service.
