Traditional Martial Arts Training in Ann Arbor Since 1974
Founded in 1974, we are the oldest full-time martial arts school in Ann Arbor, dedicated to preserving and evolving traditional East Asian martial arts. Our mission focuses on developing truthful knowledge of martial arts traditions, promoting health and self-cultivation, and contributing to the progressive evolution of these living art forms. We emphasize cooperation, mutual respect, and the philosophical principles of Budo, which guide practitioners to prevent conflict and promote harmony in all aspects of life. With decades of experience, we offer rigorous training in multiple disciplines, including Karate-do, Aikido, Kung Fu, and Wing Chun, taught by instructors with deep ties to authentic lineages.

Our facilities include cushioned training areas, specialized equipment, and multimedia resources to support comprehensive martial arts education. We foster a supportive community through shared values, rank advancement opportunities, and social events that strengthen student connections. Our curriculum integrates technical mastery with cultural and spiritual understanding, ensuring students receive holistic instruction rooted in tradition while remaining relevant to modern practitioners. Services
Karate-do
Our Karate-do program teaches Shorin-ryu and Shudokan traditions with roots in Okinawan and Chinese martial arts. Students develop precision through rooted stances, quick movements, and weapon training. Classes emphasize self-defense applications, physical conditioning, and kata (forms) practice for all skill levels.
Aikido
Aikido training focuses on spherical motion, joint locks, and throws that redirect opponents' energy. We incorporate weapon techniques (jojutsu, kenjutsu) and emphasize non-contention philosophy. Classes develop spatial awareness, blending with attacks, and applying techniques for self-defense and personal growth.
Kung Fu
Our Kung Fu curriculum includes Hung Gar (Tiger-Crane), Praying Mantis, and Sil Lum styles. Students train in both internal (soft) and external (power-focused) techniques, developing balance, striking precision, and traditional weaponry skills through progressive forms and partner drills.
Wing Chun
Wing Chun instruction covers Canton and Fushan styles with emphasis on centerline theory, trapping techniques, and efficient close-range combat. Students practice wooden dummy forms, butterfly swords, and breathing methods to develop quick reflexes and practical self-defense capabilities.
Children's Program
Designed for ages 6-12, this program introduces Karate, Aikido, Kung Fu, and Judo fundamentals. Classes focus on coordination, discipline, and cultural awareness through age-appropriate techniques, games, and character development activities that build confidence and physical fitness.
