Embrace the Tradition, Perfect Your Form

Traditional Karate of Bellingham is an independent dojo dedicated to the authentic practice of Shito-Ryu karate in the heart of Bellingham, Washington. Founded in 2013, we carry forward the strong traditions of martial arts training established by our esteemed predecessors at Pacific Martial Arts. Our dojo exists as a welcoming space where individuals from all walks of life can cultivate self-discipline, physical fitness, and mental clarity through the rigorous and rewarding practice of karate.

Our Dojo and Its Atmosphere

Our dojo is located in the historic Majestic Building downtown, nestled in a spacious ballroom that provides ample room for both individual practice and partner drills. The atmosphere within our dojo walls is one of respect, discipline, and a shared dedication to the pursuit of mastery.

We believe that the benefits of traditional martial arts training extend far beyond the physical. Through consistent training and the meticulous execution of kata, students develop invaluable qualities such as self-control, focus, resilience, and confidence. The dojo provides a supportive community where individuals can learn not only technical skills but also the importance of perseverance, humility, and respect for oneself and others.

The Shito-Ryu Tradition

At Traditional Karate of Bellingham, we are proud to practice Shito-Ryu karate, a captivating style renowned for its blend of traditional Okinawan and Japanese techniques. Shito-Ryu, founded in the early 20th century by the revered Kenwa Mabuni, is a harmonious fusion of the styles of Anko Itosu and Kanryo Higashionna, two influential karate masters. This distinctive combination creates a dynamic and comprehensive martial art system that emphasizes both hard and soft techniques, as well as a profound understanding of self-defense principles.

A Journey of Learning: Curriculum and Training

Our curriculum is based on the fundamental principles of Shito-Ryu karate, encompassing a range of essential components:

Kata (forms): These meticulously choreographed sequences of movements are the cornerstone of our training. Practicing kata cultivates strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and a deep understanding of traditional techniques.

Kumite (sparring): We incorporate a traditional approach to sparring, focusing on realistic self-defense scenarios and the application of technical concepts in a controlled setting. This helps students develop their reflexes, timing, and ability to react effectively in dynamic situations.

Bunkai (analysis):

At Traditional Karate of Bellingham, we go beyond mere execution of kata by exploring the intricate bunkai, which involve analyzing the underlying principles and techniques hidden within each movement. This deeper understanding allows students to grasp the practical applications of karate in a variety of situations.

Sensei Adam Bellingar

At the heart of Traditional Karate of Bellingham is our dedicated sensei, Adam Bellingar. Sensei Bellingar began his karate journey in 2000 at our dojo, then known as Pacific Martial Arts, eventually achieving the distinguished rank of 1st Degree Black Belt (Shodan). Following the retirement of our previous instructors, Sensei Bellingar took on the mantle of leadership, guiding our students with his wealth of experience, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to the preservation of traditional karate.

Beyond his role as a karate instructor, Sensei Bellingar brings a unique perspective to our dojo. He holds degrees in finance and business administration from Western Washington University, earning his Master of Business Administration. This blend of martial arts expertise and business acumen allows him to approach teaching with a thoughtful and strategic mindset, fostering both individual growth and the overall development of our dojo community.
