Our Story

Our story began when Gene Sorden completed his time in the United States Army and started working at Johnson's Market in Newaygo. Over the years, Gene worked his way up the ranks, learning the ins and outs of the grocery business from some of the best in the industry. In 1957, Gene took the leap and became the manager of Mumson's Market, which would eventually become Gene's Market. With the help of his family, including his children and wife, Gene built a successful business that would become a staple in the community.
