Bear Island Surveying, LLC was established in November of 2019. This company is the continuation of a land surveying company that has existed by various names for nearly 60 years. In 1961 Richard 'Dick' Floyd founded Zenith Surveying. After 23 years of providing Northeastern Minnesota with land surveying services, he sold his company to an employee named Cal Lindbeck. Cal changed the name of the Zenith Surveying to Surveying Services and continued to serve the community for 12 years. In 1996 Cal sold the company to an employee named Bruce 'Charlie' Chernak. Charlie built up the business in partnership with his wife Gail 'Sue' Chernak, and in 2019 Charlie and Sue decided to continue the tradition by selling the company to a pair of employees, Jen Zgonc and Mark Crenshaw.

Mark is a Land Surveyor in Training and will apply to take the professional exam in April 2020. He has been an employee of the company for over 14 years. Mark has been overseeing the day-to-day operation of Bear Island Surveying for over 5 years and is involved in all of the decision making affecting the company. Jen has been with the company for over 3 years. She handles the contracting, invoicing, and client database, with frequent trips out with the crew as a field technician, as well as handling some of the AutoCad drafting. She is also currently enrolled at Great Basin College and is working on a degree in Land Surveying Technology.
