Preserving Belmont Manor's History - A Journey Through Time

Belmont Manor is currently listed on the Maryland Historic Trust, Inventory of Historic Properties, and is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Lawyers Hill Historic District. The venue has a rich history, having been owned by notable institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution, the American Chemical Society, and Howard Community College.

Belmont Manor & Historic Park Timeline

The timeline of Belmont Manor dates back to 1738 when it was built as a private manor house for Caleb and Priscilla Dorsey. It was later passed on through generations of the Dorsey, Hanson, and Bruce families. In 1860, the Federal Slave Census showed Charles Hanson had 10 enslaved people on the property. This complex history is a testament to the venue's significance and the need for continued learning and understanding.
