Our Story
The Dark Horse Charters story began with two brothers, George and Will French, who have a lifelong passion for fishing. Growing up in the coastal town of Ipswich, Massachusetts, they spent countless hours exploring the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Their experience in commercial fishing and boating led them to create a unique fishing charter experience that combines comfort, safety, and adventure.
Our Boat
The F/V Dark Horse is a marvel of modern technology, featuring cutting-edge Simrad navigation equipment, radar, and autopilot. With over 25 feet of deck space and 17 feet of beam, the Dark Horse has one of the largest cockpits on the water. Its powerful Clean Efficient John Deere 6135SMF 13.5L 750 HP inboard diesel engine enables cruising speeds of 17 knots. The vessel is fully equipped for commercial fishing operations, with a large in-deck fish hold, freezer, picnic table, 178-gallon live-well, and over 25 rod holders.
Our Crew
Captain George French is a USCG-certified captain, with a keen eye for fish and a vast knowledge of the waters we fish. Captain Will French, with his mechanical background, keeps the vessel's mechanical systems in top working condition. Together, they have an unequaled combination of fishing expertise and mechanical know-how.
Our Charters
We offer a variety of charter options to suit every fishing enthusiast's needs:
- Ground Fish Charters: Join us for off-shore fishing the Jeffery's ledge and Stellwagen Bank, targeting species such as cod, haddock, pollack, red fish, whiting, hake, ling, mackerel, herring, halibut, and dog fish.
- Custom Charters: Enjoy a private fishing experience with our professional crew guiding you through the waters of the Merrimack River and Ipswich Bay, targeting striped bass, bluefish, and mackerel.
- Commercial Tuna Charters: Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience targeting giant tuna (73 and up) using live bait and/or trolling gear. Your tuna trip will be one to remember.
- Private Boat Hire: Hire the F/V Dark Horse and its professional crew for a day adventure of your choice, including ferrying services, day trips to local attractions, or designing a trip to fit your needs.
