A New Approach Wellness psychiatry is a pioneering practice that focuses on empowering clients to connect with their inherent wellness and natural healing abilities. Instead of solely concentrating on what is wrong, we emphasize building on clients' strengths and what is right with them. This innovative approach has been developed by married physicians, Dr. Aleksandra Wirga and Dr. Mariusz Wirga, who bring their expertise, skills, and compassion to the field of psychiatry.
Dr. Aleksandra Wirga and Dr. Mariusz Wirga are board-certified psychiatrists with extensive training in cognitive-behavior therapy, psycho-oncology, mindfulness, stress management, and cultivating wellbeing. They have been mentored and taught by renowned experts such as Albert Ellis, Maxie C. Maultsby, Jr, O. Carl Simonton, Marsha Linehan, David Burns, and Peter Fenner. Their passion for helping patients led them to establish a psycho-oncology intervention program in their native Poland, providing assistance to over 600 patients and their families.
Upon moving to the United States in 1993, the Wirgas continued their training with world leaders in cognitive-behavior therapy and further refined their skills and practice. Dr. Aleksandra Wirga serves as the Medical Director at the Ocean View Adult Psychiatric Hospital, a 36-bed voluntary psychiatric health facility dedicated to treating individuals with psychiatric illnesses in need of intensive inpatient services. Dr. Mariusz Wirga serves as the Medical Director of Psychosocial Oncology at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute and as the Chair of the Psychiatry Department at the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. He is also on the Board of Advisors for the National Association of Cognitive-Behavior Therapists and served as the Medical Director of the Simonton Cancer Center after Dr. Simonton's death.
In 2004, the Wirgas introduced Beat the Odds - A Cancer Survivorship Program in Long Beach, a course consisting of 10 classes teaching effective coping strategies for different aspects of cancer and its treatment. Dr. Mariusz Wirga co-authored the upcoming book "ABC of Your Emotions, " which explains how emotions work, how to manage them, and how to achieve various goals. Dr. Mariusz Wirga is currently involved in developing a multiplatform program for cancer patients and their families that includes interactive engagement using smartphones, videos, videoconferencing, and Virtual Reality.
