Who We Are

At Neighborhood Legal Services Michigan (NLSM), we believe that everyone deserves access to quality legal and advocacy services. Founded in response to the Economic Opportunity Act of 1966, we have been serving the citizens of Michigan for over five decades. As a regional business and non-profit collaborative, we strive to promote health, safety, and self-sufficiency for the most vulnerable members of our community.

Our Services

At NLSM, we offer a range of services designed to support individuals and families in overcoming serious life issues and achieving stability and opportunity. Our services are tailored to meet the unique needs of each client, and we take pride in our commitment to providing high-quality, professional services.

Our services are divided into three main categories:

Outreach, Housing, and Human Services

Our outreach and housing teams work with clients who are struggling with homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. We provide financial assistance, housing relocation and stabilization services, and case management to help clients get back on their feet. Our services include:

  • Short and medium-term rental assistance
  • Security deposits
  • Utility deposits/payments
  • Moving costs
  • Case management
  • Outreach
  • Housing search/inspection
  • Legal services
  • Credit repair
  • Financial literacy

Children's Education Division (CED)

Our Children's Education Division (CED) specializes in piloting innovative justice initiatives, educational programming for parents and youth, and other supportive services targeting youth. Our goals are to promote education, support, and empowerment for children and families.

Elder Law & Advocacy Center

Our Elder Law & Advocacy Center has been serving older adults and their caregivers for over 25 years. We provide educational opportunities, legal services, and advocate for the rights of older adults and their caregivers.

Advocacy and Education

At NLSM, we believe that education is key to empowerment. We provide education and advocacy services to support individuals and families in overcoming serious life issues and achieving stability and opportunity. Our advocacy services include:
