Building strength, flexibility, and self-discipline through Aikido

Aikido Daiwa is a renowned Aikido dojo located in the heart of Burbank, CA, serving the greater Los Angeles area. Established in 1979 by Jack Arnold Sensei, we have been dedicated to promoting the practice and philosophy of Aikido for over 40 years. Our dojo is founded on the principles of harmony, respect, and self-improvement, providing a safe and welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds to train and grow.

About Aikido

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that combines self-defense techniques with philosophical concepts, emphasizing harmony, blending, and redirection of energy. Developed by Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido focuses on neutralizing attacks through throws, joint locks, and pins, fostering a non-competitive and cooperative training environment. Our curriculum also includes traditional weapon training with the Japanese sword and staff, further enriching students' understanding and skills.

Our Chief Instructor: John Brinsley Sensei

John Brinsley Sensei, our chief instructor, has been practicing Aikido since 1991 and holds the rank of 6th Dan. He studied under the guidance of Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba and T. Miyamoto sensei at Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo. Brinsley Sensei brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our dojo, fostering an atmosphere of growth, discipline, and mutual respect.

The Dojo's History

Founded by Jack Arnold Sensei in 1979, Aikido Daiwa has evolved from a community service program to an internationally recognized dojo. Arnold Sensei, a student of T.K. Chiba Shihan and direct student of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba, was committed to promoting high-quality Aikido instruction. Today, Aikido Daiwa is a proud member of Birankai North America, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Aikido's essence and integrity.
