Our Story

Our journey began in 1989 when our founder, Mark Goertzen, decided to pursue his passion for pottery full-time after studying art at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas. Since then, we have been perfecting our craft, learning from our experiences, and gaining inspiration from other artists in the field. Over the years, our work has reached all fifty states and even traveled to all seven continents, including Antarctica.

Our Pottery

At Goertzen Pottery, we work with both porcelain and stoneware clays to create a wide range of functional and one-of-a-kind vessels. We believe in the beauty of simplicity, so most of our pieces are subtly decorated to highlight their form. We enjoy the challenge of making familiar forms new and turning simple shapes into beautiful works of art.

Soda-Fired Pottery

We recently built a soda kiln, which has opened up new possibilities for color and texture in our work. Our tried and true glazes come to life in astonishing ways in this kiln atmosphere, leading us to rediscover old forms and explore new ones. We are excited to share these unique pieces with you.

Wood-Fired Pottery

In addition to our soda-fired pieces, we also offer wood-fired pottery. This ancient technique allows us to create unique, natural-looking pieces that are both functional and beautiful. Each piece is carefully crafted and fired in a wood kiln, resulting in a distinctive look that is truly one-of-a-kind.

Gas-Fired Pottery

Our gas-fired pottery offers a more modern take on traditional ceramics. Using a gas kiln allows us to achieve a wide range of colors and effects, from subtle to dramatic. These pieces are perfect for those looking for a contemporary twist on classic pottery forms.
