Family Service Agency (FSA) is a premier provider of behavioral health services in the Phoenix valley, offering timely care that instills hope, builds resilience, and supports recovery. Our mission is to provide services that advocate for strengthening and preserving the individual and the family. This belief has been at the heart of our operations for over a century, and we remain committed to it as we continue to serve our community.

Our Story

Our story began in 1902 when Associated Charities was established by Mrs. Dwight B. (Maie Bartlett) Heard. Over the years, we have evolved and grown, merging with the Maricopa Health Center in 1923 to become the Social Service Center of Phoenix. Throughout our history, we have been dedicated to providing essential welfare services and medical care to the city and the surrounding area.

In 1944, we initiated a three-year demonstration project of a visiting nurse service, which eventually led to the establishment of the Visiting Nurse Service in 1948. When the City of Phoenix decided to stop funding the Board of Public Charities in 1948, the Community Council stepped in to assist with the study and formulation of future plans for our agency. Their recommendation was for us to continue in family welfare work, focusing on individuals who could not qualify for help at other welfare agencies.

As a result, our name was changed from the Social Service Center of Phoenix to Family Service of Phoenix in 1951, better reflecting the programs and services we offered. This included services for unmarried mothers, adoption of children, foster home care, transient assistance, family counseling, and specialized welfare services. We became a member of Valley of the Sun and Mesa United Ways in 1951 and 1954, respectively.

We have moved locations several times over the years, finally settling at our current address. In 1978, as we began to serve all of Maricopa County, our name was broadened to Family Service Agency. Today, we are proud to announce our merger with Intermountain Centers, which brings together two organizations with a shared vision to enhance the quality of life for individuals and families requiring behavioral health support and empower them to lead fulfilling lives.
