Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club: A Rich History

Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club, a private club with a classic links-style course, is located on the east side of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. Established in 1922, this 18-hole, challenging and picturesque par 70 layout is a mere 5 miles from downtown Newport, Rhode Island. The club's name, Wanumetonomy, is derived from the local lore, translating to "windy hill." Interestingly, Wanumetonomy was also the local area Narragansett Sachem or Native Indian Governor of the Aquidneck Island in 1638, after whom the club was named.

The 18-hole course, designed by the famed golf course architect Seth Raynor in the "sea coast" style of open fields and few trees, offers an ever-changing view of Narragansett Bay's East Passage as the fairways wind their way along the contours of Wanumetonomy's hillside expanse. The course's stylish bunkers, a testament to Raynor's design, continue to challenge the equanimity of the most accomplished golfers, making it one of the state's finest golf courses.

In 1999, golf course architect Ron Prichard developed a Golf Course Master Plan for long-term restorations under contract with Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club. Two decades later, Wanumetonomy hired another golf course architect, Tyler Ray, in 2021, to kick off a new plan for the next twenty years.
