Where the Peace Pipe is Passed
Ischoda Yacht Club, founded in 1886, is one of the oldest and most prestigious yacht clubs on Long Island Sound. With a rich history spanning over 135 years, the club has undergone many transformations, adapting to the changing times while remaining true to its core values of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and respect for tradition.
Our History
Ischoda Yacht Club has a long and storied past, dating back to its founding in 1886. The club was initially established by a group of boatmen, mostly fishermen, who shared a passion for boating and a desire for a sense of community. The name "Ischoda" originates from the Mohawk Indian Tribe, meaning "A campfire around which the peace pipe was passed, " reflecting the peaceful relationships between the white settlers and the Native Americans.
The Early Years
In its early years, the club was primarily concerned with promoting pleasure boating and fostering a sense of community among its members. The club's first meeting place was located in East Norwalk, the center of the shellfish and fishing industries at the time. As the club grew, its membership expanded to include women and children, welcoming them to the club for the first time in 1956.
Modern Era
Today, Ischoda Yacht Club remains committed to its founding principles of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and respect for tradition. The club is proud of its long history and is dedicated to preserving its heritage while embracing the changing times.
