Common Foot Disorders and their Causes

At the Podiatry Practice of Dr. Sam Rameas, we diagnose and treat a variety of foot disorders, including:

  • Arthritis: This condition is caused by a wearing away of the cartilage of the joints, resulting in painful and swollen joints. It can be caused by heredity, extra body weight, age, improperly fitting shoes, and injury to the area.
  • Bunions/Hallux Valgus: This condition is characterized by the big toe being pushed inward with the joint being pushed outward, resulting in an inflamed swelling of the big toe joint. It can be caused by heredity, flat feet or trauma.
  • Fungus Nails: This condition is caused by fungal growth in the nail bed area, causing discolored and brittle nails. It can be caused by excessive perspiration, resulting in sweaty, moist socks, improper nail care, and/or ingrown toenails.
  • Hammertoes: This condition is characterized by the toes being crooked and/or buckled under, causing joints to protrude. It can be caused by wearing shoes that are too narrow, abnormalities in the arch and muscles of the foot.
  • Ingrown Nails: This condition is caused by the nail growing into one or both sides of the skin of the toe, resulting in painful and swollen toes. It can be caused by improperly cut toenails and/or improperly fitting shoes.
  • Flat Feet: This condition is characterized by the foot not having a normal arch, meaning there is little to no arch in the bottom of the foot. It can be a progressive disorder and is often caused by heredity or abnormalities in the arch and muscles of the foot.
