The Art Gallery on Pendleton Square is more than just a business-it is a community of artists with a shared passion for creating works that inspire, engage, and ignite the imagination. Founded in 2014 by sculptor Lou Koppel, the gallery is the result of the visionary's efforts in bringing together 12 talented artists from the Clemson, Pendleton, and Anderson areas to create a physical space that embodies their collective love for art. Meeting in the Clemson Arts Center Artists Guild, Lou and his fellow artists envisioned what the store-front gallery would become: a meeting place where patrons and local artists could exchange ideas, celebrate the beauty of creativity and handcraftsmanship, and elevate the artistic landscape of Pendleton.

The gallery opened its doors for the first time in August of 2014, with a modest 6-month lease and a leap of faith. Before long, its presence resonated deeply with the local community, who expressed their support and embraced the cooperative's efforts wholeheartedly. With a newfound sense of confidence, the cooperative signed another 6-month lease and was on its way to becoming a well-established fixture in Pendleton.

However, in January of 2017, a car accident left a significant impact on the gallery when it plowed into its exterior, badly damaging the old brick wall and leaving a gaping hole. Faced with the overwhelming task of emptying the gallery and finding a new home, the cooperative received help from the Clemson Arts Center, who offered gallery space for the next two months. Grateful for the opportunity to stay in business, the gallery was temporarily housed in its new location and continued searching for its permanent home.

Dedicated to their vision and their art, the Art Gallery on Pendleton Square emerged stronger than ever as it reopened its doors in April of the same year in its current, larger space on the Square. Now occupying almost double the initial square footage, the gallery welcomes more local artists to sell their work and expand the reach of their creativity and imagination in the flourishing community of Pendleton.
