Designs by Karen is a family-owned business, run by a mother and daughter team. We are passionate about creating beautiful kitchens and bathrooms that meet our clients' unique visions. Our expertise in custom cabinetry and interior design has earned us a reputation for excellence in Midland, Michigan.

Our Story

Our journey began with Karen's passion for design, which started at a young age. She drew house plans and envisioned walking through each room. This passion led her to build her first house in 1987, another in 1992, and her current home in 2010. Over the years, she remained close to the building industry, taking great pride in her accomplishments. Karen's experience in design and her dedication to her clients have made her a trusted friend and a mother of five girls. She is married to her best friend and business partner, Eric Ostergren.

Meet Janelle

Janelle, Karen's daughter, joined the team in 2018. She is a 6th generation Midlander, with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Saginaw Valley University, majoring in Accounting. Before joining Designs by Karen, Janelle managed an entire department at a local CPA firm. She brings a natural talent for interior design and a passion for problem-solving, which often extends into her home life.
