Our Story

JD Herrera's journey in law began in 1978 when he was admitted to the New Mexico State Bar. His career has been characterized by a deep commitment to justice and a fierce advocacy for his clients' rights. In the early stages of his career, JD served as an Assistant District Attorney in Albuquerque, gaining invaluable experience in prosecuting criminal cases. This experience provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system, which he leverages today to defend his clients vigorously.

His career then took him to Santa Fe, where he worked as an Assistant District Attorney/Special Prosecutor, handling the high-profile cases stemming from the New Mexico Penitentiary Riot. Following this, he served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Albuquerque, defending the city in various civil lawsuits. In 1985, JD transitioned to private practice, focusing his expertise on criminal defense. He was among the first attorneys in New Mexico to earn the prestigious recognition of criminal trial specialist from the newly formed Board of Legal Specialization in 1991.

Throughout his career, JD has handled a wide range of criminal cases, from serious felonies like homicide and RICO offenses to drug and white-collar crimes at both the state and federal levels. He has achieved notable success, including successfully defending four federal death penalty cases. He has been recognized for his legal excellence as a Super Lawyer of the Southwest.
