Preserving the past, for the future.
Welcome to Thomas Johnson Furniture Restoration, where we've been dedicated to restoring fine and antique furniture since 1979. Our journey began in Newton, Massachusetts, where we operated a shop with four or five employees for over 30 years. However, as we approached the 30-year milestone, we decided to scale back and operate a shop on our own property without employees. This led us to move to our current home in Gorham, Maine, where we now run the business with a more personal touch.
Tom, the founder, started learning about furniture repair at the age of 12, working in his father's antique restoration shop in Silver Spring, Maryland. Although he pursued other interests for a while, he returned to furniture restoration, opening his own shop in Newton in 1979. It's a family affair, as Tom's oldest brother, Robert J. Johnson, operated their father's shop in Maryland until 2018, and his youngest brother, Greg, has a shop of his own in Avon, New York. Tom and Jane's daughter, Emily, is also a skilled woodworker, having opened a custom framing shop in Portland, Oregon.
Jane's involvement in the shop started on occasional weekends, helping Tom with various jobs. After their daughter was born, Jane left her full-time job and started working part-time, taking over all administrative tasks. Today, she continues to manage the administrative side of the business while often helping Tom in the shop.
