Northern Berkshire Solid Waste

Welcome to the Northern Berkshire Solid Waste Management District, a collaboration of 14 member municipalities in Western Massachusetts. Our ultimate goal is to preserve the planet by providing information and resources pertaining to recycling. We've been making a difference for over 30 years, and we're proud to have been a part of the environmental efforts in our community.

Our History

The district was established in 1988, when town officials came together to better the environment, working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MASSDEP). By closing landfills and improving recycling efforts, we've made significant strides towards a cleaner environment. Sandy Totter was instrumental in building the foundation of the district, and her legacy continues to inspire our work today.

Our Team

We're a dedicated team of professionals, including Program Coordinator Linda Cernik, who has been quoted as saying, "Best job ever." Linda brings a lifelong passion for the environment and a deep understanding of the local community to her role. Our team works tirelessly to ensure that we meet the highest standards of state compliance and environmental stewardship.

Services Offered

We offer a wide range of services, including recycling resources, collection events, and transfer and recycling stations. We also partner with environmentally friendly service providers to ensure that all waste is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. If you have items that don't belong in your household recycling bin, we can help you find out where to recycle, reuse, or repurpose them in Massachusetts.

Partners in Recycling

We collaborate with a variety of organizations to promote recycling and environmental awareness. This includes working with Williams College, which offers an Environmental Planning Workshop that assigns student teams to assist with projects related to environmental planning. We're grateful for the support of these partners and look forward to continuing our efforts to preserve the environment for future generations.
