Your Partner in Sustainable Waste Management & Recycling
Established in 1988 through Massachusetts legislation, our district represents a collaborative effort of 14 municipalities dedicated to advancing recycling and environmental stewardship. We provide professional waste management services, including public education programs, hazardous waste collection, and facility development, enabling small communities to pool resources for greater impact. With over three decades of experience, our team has cultivated partnerships with state agencies like MassDEP and local organizations to implement innovative solutions such as textile recovery, e-waste recycling, and composting initiatives. Our program director, Linda Cernik, continues the legacy of environmental leadership established by Sandy Totter, expanding educational outreach through programs like The Green Team that engage schools and residents.

We operate specialized recycling services for electronics, batteries, paint, and scrap metal while promoting community-driven initiatives like swap shops and textile collection bins. Our tire recycling program serves multiple towns with tiered pricing, and we coordinate special collection events to ensure proper disposal of difficult materials. Through strategic partnerships with organizations like Recycle Smart MA and East Coast Electronic Recycling, we maintain compliance with state regulations while reducing landfill waste. Our commitment to sustainability extends to supporting local composting services and providing resources for households and businesses to adopt eco-friendly practices. By combining technical expertise with community engagement, we strive to preserve Northern Berkshire's natural resources for future generations.

Services
Recycling Programs
Our district manages comprehensive recycling programs for paper, glass, plastic, and metal materials. Partnering with local municipalities, we process 845 tons of recyclables annually through curbside collection and transfer station drop-offs. These efforts reduce landfill waste while promoting sustainable resource management across Northern Berkshire communities.
E-Waste Collection
We provide specialized e-waste recycling services for computers, appliances, and electronic devices. Through partnerships with certified recyclers, we ensure proper disposal of 67,550 pounds of electronics annually. This program prevents hazardous materials from entering landfills while recovering valuable components for reuse.
Textile Recovery
Our textile recycling initiative collects 96,420 pounds of unwanted clothing annually through strategically placed bins. This program diverts usable materials from landfills while supporting local charities through donated items. Participating towns benefit from reduced waste disposal costs and increased sustainability metrics.
Composting Education
We offer comprehensive composting education programs for households and businesses. Partnering with local service providers, we provide resources for proper food waste disposal and home composting techniques. These initiatives support regional sustainability goals by reducing organic waste in landfills.
Tire Recycling
Our tire recycling program serves multiple towns with tiered pricing based on tire type. Through designated collection points, we process used tires to prevent environmental contamination while recovering materials for alternative uses like playground surfaces and construction projects.
