A History of Hospitality

Hillside Waterfront Hotel has been a staple of Door County since 1865, when Norwegian immigrants Martin and Maria Oleson purchased a four-room log cabin and began renting rooms to guests. Over the years, the property expanded, and in 1901, it officially became the Hillside Hotel. Today, the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcasing its significant role in the area's transition from lumber and fishing to tourism.

In 2002, the hotel underwent a transformation into a luxury boutique hotel, carefully preserving its original structure while enhancing the guest experience. Current owner Diane Taillon, who purchased the property in 2016, continues the rich tradition of hospitality, operating her real estate company, Arbor Crowne Properties, from the inn's lobby. Diane takes great care in maintaining the stunning gardens and grounds, while innkeeper Julia Tidquist adds a splash of freshness with local bouquets year-round.
