El Cerrito Preschool Cooperative (ECPC) is a non-profit, parent-run play-based preschool for children ages 3-5, serving families in the greater Bay Area community since 1940. As one of the longest continuously running cooperatives in the United States, ECPC has offered children and families an open and supportive play-based educational world to nurture their development as they play, learn, and grow at their own pace.
Our Philosophy
At ECPC, we believe in supporting children's emotional and social development. We accomplish this through extensive work with children on solving problems, first with adult support and eventually with children negotiating and problem-solving independently. We model, guide, and offer compassionate assistance to children as they learn to work through their conflicts. We encourage listening and self-expression, and we help children practice the important skill of self-regulation.
Our Facilities
ECPC has a unique and innovative approach to early childhood education. Our school has both indoor and outdoor areas where children are encouraged to move freely. We have two large outside play yards with both sand and tanbark areas where children can choose to use tricycles, swings, climbing structures, or engage in creative free play. Inside, children can choose from the art area, block and loft room, and game room. Our facilities are designed to provide a stimulating and supportive environment that fosters curiosity, creativity, and exploration.
Our Staff
Our licensed and trained staff bring cultural richness to the program and the children. Our teachers carefully consider activities that will engage interest, stimulate curiosity, and encourage experimentation. Our projects are open-ended, with an expectation that children will use materials in divergent and creative ways.
Co-op Life
At ECPC, we believe in the importance of the partnership between parents and teachers. Our parents and teachers work together to create a nurturing and supportive environment that values diversity, inclusivity, and community. Our parents are actively involved in the daily operations of the school, and we encourage our families to take an active role in shaping their child's educational journey.
Parent Involvement
As a parent-run cooperative, ECPC relies heavily on the involvement of our parents to ensure the success of our school. Our parents play vital roles in our school, from serving on the board to assisting in the classrooms to participating in school events. We believe that the relationships between our parents, teachers, and children are essential to creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
Our Community
ECPC values diversity and inclusivity in all its forms. We believe that every family has a unique voice and perspective to share. Our goal is to create a community that is welcoming and respectful of all families, regardless of their race, ethnicity, national origin, geography, religion, gender identity, affectional or sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and marital, parental, or economic status.
