Our History

For over a century, State Painting Company has been a trusted name in the Milwaukee area, providing exceptional painting services to both residential and commercial clients. Our story began in 1916 when Thomas Chmielewski, a dedicated craftsman, launched his paint contracting business. Starting with humble beginnings, utilizing a simple two-wheeled pushcart, Thomas's unwavering work ethic and commitment to quality quickly gained recognition. As his business flourished, he transitioned from a pushcart to a Model T Ford, reflecting his growing enterprise. The company evolved into "Chmielewski and Son" as Thomas's sons joined him, bringing fresh energy and expertise. Residential painting formed the foundation of their success for many years, strengthening their reputation within the community. Upon Thomas's retirement, his five sons carrying on his legacy, renamed the company "State Painting Company". Together, they transformed the business into one of Milwaukee's leading commercial painting contractors. John, Stanley, Joseph, Aliose, and Leo-the five brothers-guided the company through years of prosperity, solidifying its position as a reliable and high-performing painting contractor.

However, leadership transitions within the family were inevitable. In 1991, John, the youngest brother, retired, passing the torch to the next generation-his son Michael Chmielewski and his nephew Norman Niemiec. Together, they navigated the continuing evolution of the company, upholding the founding principles of quality and dedication. Eighty-eight years after Thomas Chmielewski established his company, Norman retired in 2012, paving the way for Michael Chmielewski to officially retire in 2016. Today, State Painting Company stands proudly under the leadership of the fourth generation-Tony Niemiec, Steven Niemiec, and Kevin Chmielewski. They fully embrace the hard work ethic and cherished family values that have been ingrained in the company's DNA. State Painting's legacy continues to shine brightly, representing over 100 years of commitment to excellence in the Milwaukee community.
