The Solid Waste Disposal Authority is a public, non-profit corporation responsible for the finance and operation of the city and county's solid waste management system. Established in 1985, our mission is to provide environmentally advanced programs while maintaining reasonable waste disposal costs for residents of Huntsville, Madison, and Madison County.

Our waste management system is composed of four components: Waste-To-Energy, Landfill, Recycling, and Waste Reduction. We continually evaluate our programs and activities to ensure we are staying ahead of environmental concerns and issues.

Waste Management Services

We offer a range of waste management services, including the collection and disposal of household waste, recyclables, and hazardous waste. Our programs are designed to promote environmental sustainability and responsible waste management practices.

Curbside Recycling Program

Our curbside recycling program is conducted in partnership with the Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA). The program accepts a variety of recyclable materials, including paper, cardboard, aluminum, and glass. We also provide education and outreach programs to promote recycling and reduce waste.

Waste-to-Energy Facility

Our Waste-to-Energy Facility is the only facility of its kind in the state of Alabama, allowing us to convert solid waste into electricity and steam. The facility is equipped to handle a variety of waste streams, including municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris.

Landfill and Recycling Facilities

We operate two landfills and multiple recycling facilities across Madison County. Our landfills are designed to receive and store solid waste, while our recycling facilities process recyclable materials and convert them into new products.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

We operate a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 1055 A Cleaner Way, Huntsville, where residents can dispose of hazardous waste, including paint, chemicals, and other household substances.

Environmental Stewardship

At the Solid Waste Disposal Authority, we are committed to protecting the environment and promoting sustainability. We strive to minimize our environmental impact through reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of waste sent to landfills, and promotion of recycling and composting.

Community Involvement

We engage with the local community through outreach and education programs, promoting environmental stewardship and responsible waste management practices. We also partner with local schools and community organizations to educate the public on the importance of recycling and waste reduction.
