Our Story
The Moorings Yacht & Country Club is a premier private country club located in Vero Beach, Florida, situated on the shores of the Indian River Lagoon. With a rich history dating back to the late 1950s, our story is one of transformation and growth.
From Mangroves to a Thriving Community
In the late 1950s, Julio Lobo, a Cuban sugar baron, purchased 535 acres of mangrove swamp. The property was unusable in its natural state, but Lobo saw potential in the land. With dedication and perseverance, the area was transformed, and The Moorings was born.
The Gonzalez Family's Influence
In 1971, Jorge Gonzalez, son of an old sherry-making family from Jerez-de-la-Frontera, Spain, assumed the directorship of The Moorings Development Company. Jorge and his wife, Leonor, and their son, Boris, moved to Vero Beach and played a significant role in shaping the community. They designed and developed the first condominium, South Passage, and built the par-64 golf course, designed by Pete Dye.

Through the years, The Moorings has continued to evolve, with a focus on providing exceptional amenities and experiences. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in the quality of our facilities, including Jim Fazio's Hawk's Nest Course and Pete Dye's Moorings Signature Course. Both properties are certified by The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP), ensuring the preservation of natural habitats and resources.
