Gates and Controls, Inc. was founded in November 1991 by Loren Tomlinson. Loren originally entered the automated gate industry in 1980 when he formed the first installation company in the Northwest. The company specialized in the design, fabrication, and installation of gates and gate operators. It grew into one of the largest and most successful businesses of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. By the 1990s, the gate operator industry was growing rapidly, and Loren's experience and success with the installation company naturally led him into the wholesale distribution business, forming Gates and Controls, Inc. He is currently President of the corporation.

Today, the company is focused on supplying stocking dealers and authorized installers with the latest and most technologically advanced generation of operators and access control equipment. The company makes a serious effort to support its growing number of customers through educational workshops and seminars, Gate Talk, the company newsletter, and its own publication, Basic Guide to Gate Operators, authored by Shawn Tomlinson.

Shawn's experience in the industry is lifelong. Growing up in the installation business under the guidance of his father provided him with an early opportunity to experience the business first hand. Shawn earned his business degree from Western Washington University, and holds a Commercial/Industrial Journeyman's electrical license and Electrical Administrator's license for the State of Washington. He is currently Vice President of Gates and Controls, Inc. and acting CEO of daily operations.
