Our History
Inyo and Mono Counties were originally born of mining activities, with many mining camps contributing to their growth. However, the founders wisely selected agricultural settlements as county seats, leading to the establishment of thriving communities such as Coleville, Bridgeport, and Lee Vining in Mono County, and Coso, Kearsarge, Bend City, and countless other mining camps in Inyo County.
The first title work in the region was done by title searchers or abstracters in the bustling mining camps of the day. However, the longevity of established businesses was limited, and much of the early title work was likely done in law offices at the county seats. One such title abstract business was established by Attorney Ben H. Yandell in Independence, which was later purchased by court stenographer Cecil MacFarlane in 1913.
MacFarlane's business prospered, and he acquired a small parcel of land in 1917 for the purpose of constructing a permanent building for his title company. This building, which still stands today, is a testament to our long-standing commitment to serving the Eastern Sierra and the people who call it home.
