Creating Everlasting Smiles

Our Story

The Last Stop Hotel & Saloon proudly stands on a foundation rich with history. Since its establishment in 1898, this building has witnessed the evolution of The Dalles, serving as a home to various establishments, from saloons and restaurants to a hotel and, as local historian Mary Davis recalls, even a "place of negotiable affection." Over the years, it has donned several names including the Hotel Albert and housed institutions like the Citizens National Bank and the French & Community Bank. Early 20th century saw a first-class grill operating within its walls, while a private bar known as the Celilo Room added to its unique charm. The building's past reveals glimpses of its inhabitants, some who resided there permanently, leaving behind intriguing tales.

Driven by respect for its heritage, we meticulously remodeled the Saloon, preserving its external character and architectural details that had been obscured by time and modifications. Antique discoveries and hidden elements now blend seamlessly into the saloon's decor and the hotel's aesthetic, inviting guests to uncover the stories embedded within its walls.

Remembering The Last Stop

Our decision to name the place "The Last Stop Hotel & Saloon" wasn't arbitrary. It pays homage to The Dalles' prominent role in the American westward expansion. Prior to the construction of the Barlow Road in 1846, The Dalles marked the endpoint of the Oregon Trail, welcoming weary travelers who had journeyed for months across the continent. The iconic trail ended abruptly at this point, hindered by the Columbia River's formidable presence and the towering cliffs surrounding it. The completion of the Barlow Road shifted the trail's terminus to Oregon City, but for a pivotal period, The Dalles remained the intrepid pioneers' last stop before unveiling the wonders of the Pacific Northwest.

The name also serves as a playful nod to the previous establishment, "The Vault, " which earned its notoriety for its boisterous past. Stories abound of unruly characters, madam-run operations, and violent confrontations spilling onto the streets, a turbulent history that even extended into the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The Vault, sadly, became synonymous with the final stop for many individuals heading to the local jail.

Our Journey to The Dalles

On a personal level, our name choice encapsulates our very own experience with The Dalles. Our visits to this charming town quickly transformed into a longing for a simpler, slower-paced lifestyle. We found ourselves captivated by its natural beauty - 300 sunny days a year! - and its deep-rooted history, a tangible connection to the establishment of the Western United States and Oregon. The Dalles became our "last stop, " our haven, a place where we could put down roots and contribute to its rejuvenation.

We purchased a historic home, embraced the slower pace of life, and decided to invest in this classic building, joining hands with others who share our vision of revitalizing downtown and preserving The Dalles' remarkable legacy.
