Transforming Healthcare with Technology-Enabled Solutions
Our Story
Southern California Ballet has a rich history that dates back to 1983, when it was founded as the Black Mountain Dance Center. Over the years, we have undergone significant changes, both locationally and organizationally, to become the leading dance institution it is today. Our founders' mission has always been to provide professional ballet training that prepares students for a career in dance or any other path they choose.
Mission, Vision, and Values
Our mission is to empower aspiring dancers to reach their full potential and to elevate the community through educational programs and imaginative performances. Our vision is to become a world-class dance facility in San Diego that trains dancers for a professional career, empowers people for a life of success, and welcomes the community to be part of an extraordinary experience.
We hold ourselves to the highest standards in all that we do, from our training and production values to the way we conduct ourselves in the world. We champion respect and kindness, allowing space for everyone to reach their full potential. We strive to help each individual balance their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Most importantly, we believe that all are welcome here, and together we can be more than the sum of our parts.
Faculty Leadership
Our artistic directors, Martha Leebolt and Toby Batley, bring with them a wealth of professional experience and expertise. Martha is a renowned principal dancer with numerous roles created for her, including Cleopatra in "Cleopatra", Daisy in "The Great Gatsby", Beauty in "Beauty and the Beast", Cinderella in "Cinderella", and Julia in the South Bank Award-winning "1984". Toby has also had a distinguished career, dancing most leading roles in Northern Ballet's repertoire, including Marc Anthony in "Cleopatra", Jay Gatsby in "The Great Gatsby", and Prince Mikhail in "Cinderella".
Academy
Our Academy program is designed to bring structure, transparency, and objectivity to ballet education. Our training method is built on the professional experience of our artistic directors and faculty, as well as their mentors. We have developed a progressive syllabus that fosters progress in-line with international standards in the dance world, and includes modern anatomy and movement science in the broader curriculum.
Classes and Levels
Our classes are divided into levels, through which students progress by participating in annual assessments with a panel of professional experts. Students focus on developing both mindset and the physical skills required to pursue dance professionally. We offer a range of classes, from Creative Ballet for younger students to more advanced classes for older students.
Company Level
Our Company Level program is designed for more advanced students who are serious about pursuing a career in dance. We offer a range of classes, including ballet technique, pointe, and repertoire.
